The Mighty Midget - Leica Compact Binoculars

The one tool that all birdwatchers, hikers or nature lovers treasure above all others is a really good pair of compact, lightweight binoculars. They just add so much value to the experience without breaking your back and are usually indispensable to those who own them.

Although there are several fine examples on the market, let's take a look at the Leica compact binoculars range as a very good example of the genre.

Leica has been making optics of exceptional quality since 1912 and this proud tradition is evident in the Leica Ultravid compact binocular range. The range consists of 2 basic models which are available in two finishes with a brown leather case available for both as an accessory.

The two models are an 8 x 20 and a 10 x 25 variant, both available as

-BL (leather insert finish) and
-BR (rubber finish) options.

The 8 x 20 BR is the least expensive of the 4 options and retails at an average of $750.00. Theleather case will add approximately $120 to the price of each model.

The Ultravid 8 x 20 BR is usually considered to be the ace in the family as it combines excellent features with the lowest price. These binos weigh a scant 8.5 oz (241 g) and sport diminutive 2.75" x 3.7" x 1.4" (70 x 94 x 36 mm) dimensions. Don't let their size fool you though as they cram a lot into that tiny package.

The binoculars have a

- 330' field of view at 1000 yards (100 @ 900 meter) with a
- 2,5 mm exit pupil and 15 mm eye relief.

They will focus crystal clear right down to 7.2' (2.2 meter) and are tough as well as small with nitrogen purged waterproofing and a shockproof rubber coating.

The 6 lenses feature the Leica full HDC multi coating and the prism is BaK-4 phase coated.

As compact roof prism binoculars go these may not be the cheapest but then again binoculars are just not the sort of thing you want to apply single ply toilet paper economics to.

The feature set of the range and inherent quality of the Leica brand will make the Ultravid range of Leica compact binoculars life long companions to any nature buff.
